Can a landlord evict someone for no reason in Michigan?

In Michigan, a landlord generally cannot evict a tenant “for no reason” during the term of a valid lease agreement; they must have legal cause such as nonpayment of rent, a lease violation, illegal activity, or other statutory grounds and must follow the required notice and formal court eviction process. Landlords also cannot physically remove you or cut off utilities without a court order.

If there’s no written lease or the written lease has expired and hasn’t been renewed, the tenancy is typically month‑to‑month. In that case, the landlord doesn’t need a separate reason to end the tenancy, they must give the appropriate written notice (usually 30 days for a month‑to‑month tenancy) before pursuing eviction if the tenant stays.
