How Long Can a Residential Lease Be in Alabama?

In Alabama, the maximum duration of a standard residential lease agreement is one (1) year. However, a lease can be longer if the exact duration of the tenancy is specified in the lease and agreed upon by both landlord and tenant.

Additionally, leases that don’t specify a duration are assumed to be month-to-month leases if rent is paid monthly, or week-to-week leases if rent is paid weekly (AL Code § 35-9A-161 (2019)).
