The standard duration of a residential lease in Maine is one (1) year. Verbal leases are permitted, but a lease formed verbally is considered a ‘tenancy at will’.
A tenancy at will doesn’t afford the same protections as a written lease. It is recommended that all leases, regardless of duration, be in writing.
