If a landlord in Washington D.C. does not return the security deposit within the 30-75 day limit, the tenant stands to recover the full security deposit and interest. If the deposit is withheld in bad faith, the tenant may recover triple the withheld funds and interest, plus legal costs associated with its recovery in Small Claims Court, if required.
